THE 5-SECOND TECHNIQUE THAT REDUCES RESISTANCE
Most of us resist being told what to do, but we almost always follow through on what we’ve told ourselves.
In this video, I explore the power of pledges. A small commitment, spoken in our own words, can shape behaviour far more effectively than instructions or reminders. One study found that when people were simply asked to promise they’d call to cancel a booking, no-shows dropped dramatically. Nothing else changed. Just the act of saying “yes, I will.”
The same principle applies in leadership, persuasion and change. People commit to what they declare, not what we demand. If you want a decision to stick, create the space for others to choose it and say it themselves.
A simple verbal commitment can turn intention into action.
